The first match of Mladenov as a coach of the youth national team was the draw with Poland – 2:2 on Sunny Beach. We were struggling to qualify for the European Championship and the Olympics. Absurd things happened. We had to play away in Poland when one of the most important players had been summoned for the first team - Georgi Peev, Ilian Stoyanov, Georgi Bachev, Hristo Iovov and Zahari Sirakov. But the most absurd thing happened after the match with England in VratsaIf we won, we would qualify. But in the evening before the match I received a call from the Football Union and I was told that Martin Petrov had to play for the first team. He was one of my most important players and I secretly hoped he would play for us. Martin came to stadum after the match had started and was not allowed to take part. This team deserved to played on the European Championship. We won over Sweden 4:1 away. I played with two men in attack – Asen Bukarev and Dimitar Berbatov. Unfortunately, organizational problems did not allow us to reach our goal.
